Calmar, Iowa is a small, but vibrant, town in Northeast Iowa’s Winneshiek County.
Calmar was founded by Norwegians, but named by Swedish-born Alfred Clark after Kalmar Sound on the southeast coast of Sweden. Kalmar was also Clark’s home town.
Calmar eventually became a major railroad hub of the Milwaukee Road between Marquette and Mason City. The Calmar Train Depot is now a tourist attraction.
